Creativity
In Isaac Bell's thesis, he uses a quote that says "Writing is the most important technology
in the history of the human species, except how to make power". The
creation of new media has allowed users to spread creativity through their own
writings and stories. Sites like Wattpad allow users to share fanfiction or
other types of stories. Amazon allows
users to easily self publish their own novels which lessens the restrictions on
who can be an author. These writings published in new media also allow users
to respond in comments or with their own writings. New media also allows users
to take stories and characters that they already know and change them into
their own. Barne's article in the New York Times shows how users are taking
Disney characters and depicting them in their own scenarios. Users show
creativity by reinventing these characters in drawings on sites like Tumblr,
animations on Youtube, or stories on Wattpad.

It's fun to see how social media expands the realm of creativity. Like with fan fiction, some people might not be well known, but they have so many great ideas and they now have the tools to share them with others.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your thoughts on the increased creativity with new media. I believe another example of this is social media websites like Instagram and Youtube. In order to attract a larger audience, people are pushed to be more creative and thoughtful in the content they produce so they can be original with their ideas and stand out. It will be interesting to see what kind of creativity the next social media platform will produce.
