Blog v Wiki

Blogs are a place for individuals to share their opinions and views on topics that interest them without censorship or restrictions. People can comment and express their own opinions with the blog owners. Wikis are a place where people can create a web page that can be altered. People can collaborate and share information in real time. I believe that today it is important for people to come together in order to hear other people’s opinions and to create a community. In the article “Brooklyn Blog Helps Lead to Drug Raid” we see how the members of the community collaborated and gave several accounts of what they witnessed going on in their neighborhood.  This shows how blogs can help people band together for a common cause. In this case, the cause was to have the police investigate the “drug house”.  In Morse’s article, we’ve seen how Wiki’s are used in the workspace for employees to collaborate and share information. The use of the wiki allows peers to edit others work for mistakes and to add information that may be missing. I believe the possibilities for wikis can be endless. They can be used in workplaces, classrooms, and niche communities to share information such as bird watching or knitting.

  1. Hi Julie,

It was great reading your post. You raise a good point about using wikis in the workplace. Often, companies don't use Google Docs and use Microsoft Word to draft memos, and this prevents them from working on the same document simultaneously. However, if wikis could somehow be incorporated into this, it would make the drafting process much more efficient. Looking at another example, when private companies prepare to go public and draft a prospectus, they often end up having 30 people from multiple organizations talking at the same time when one person types. The prospectus drafting process will be much more efficient with the utilization of wikis.
